Pinterest Inspired Science Art

Pinterest is going to be the death of my bank account! But I loved these art pieces I found and couldn't help myself from trying to recreate them for above our son's book shelves.

I did not trace these images, this was free hand!

Now if we just don't look too close, my version looks great! :)

For the lettering I used my Cricut machine and leftover vinyl from the nursery wall art I made for the nursery. I used the same Lyrical Letters cartridge to keep a cohesive look throughout the room.

I loved the jewel tones they used so I mixed my paints in sort of the same fashion. Basically I copied it all lol.

I bought a multi-pack of 8"x10" stretched canvas for about $20 and the paint was only about $5.

I can't wait for the hubs to get home to hang them! I will post another picture once they are hung up in the nursery!

*Update* We hung them up by all his books!

Crib Skirt

With all the custom crib bedding out there I still was not able to find exact matches to our Nursing Chair we reupholstered.

So I took to the left over fabric I had and made our own to match.

Every crib is different but our skirt measured 52"L (front) x29"W (sides) x18"H (tall).

I wanted to add the blue with the gray so I decided to add welting halfway down the front and a small accent triangle in blue as well.

Just so happens that you can only really see these details when sitting in the nursing chair across the room.

But I think it turned out lovely!

Peanut Burp Rags

Has Pinterest drained anyone else's bank account? Well after doing so many appliqued Cricut Burp Rags I decided to make different (less time consuming) burp rags for my son soon to arrive.

And of course took to Pinterest. When I searched I found lots of cute contoured ones to fit over your shoulder.
These measure 9"x 16" with a slight curve. Flannel on one side terry cloth on the other.

What I used...
- Flannel (most were old scraps so I made a design element with the 2.5" band in the middle)
- 1/2 an old terry cloth hand towel
- Coordinating thread
- Sewing machine

The band in the middle actually made for a nice marker for the middle so you can have equal coverage when in use. I sewed around the edges using the ol' sew and turn method where you sew with right sides together and then turn right sides out. I then top stitched the edges and down the middle (one both sides of the band).

I also added a small loop tag on one end to hook toys from.

As an extra, I made matching two sided flannel cloth wipes.

And here are some I made using smaller scraps just by adding an inch border.

Hope you like them!

Model Plane Mobile

When my husband and I found out we were having a boy we quickly decided on a plane motif for the nursery. And with my husband's creativity mixed with mine, we thought of making a plane mobile out of models.

My husband chose the planes and constructed them and I hung them (well more like directed hubs how I wanted it done).  Hey what can I say, I am 36 weeks pregnant!

We used plastic propellers and drilled small holes for the fishing line to hang each plane from.

Using a drywall anchor and bolt we secured it to the ceiling. This method kept us from having to balance the planes' weights too!

It looks great over his crib!

Nursing Pillow Cover

Ok, I recently went baby shopping to get everything else we needed before our little guy arrives. My sister mentioned getting 2+ nursing pillow covers. Ok I thought, no biggy! Yeah for $12 and up (saw one for $22!!!!) I thought no way, I can make my own!

Take that retailer of choice!

Here's what I used:
- 1 yard of fabric (I had flannel)
- Sewing machine
- Marking pens
- Pattern paper (sheets of scrap taped together, high tech I know)

I traced around my pillow and measured the depth, coming up with a pattern. What I did not draw out was the 3"x25" strip of fabric I needed for the center curve.

The pattern is about 14" wide (from fold edge) and 20.5" tall.

I cut one solid piece and then for the back I cut it in two pieces. On the pattern I drew two dotted lines about 2" apart. This was for the closure of the pillow, I chose to do snap tape but you can also do a zipper.

The center curve needed about 3" of extra space for the fluffiness, seen here:

And one last picture because I think it turned out great (even though this was my first attempt)! That rarely ever happens so I thought I would pat myself on the back :)

This project, from tracing the pillow to finished product, took about 2 hours. Questions are welcome below!

Reupholstered Couch

When my husband and I moved, yet again, we bought a house with a basement! I was excited to have a basement again and as an added bonus it has a fireplace. But one thing was missing, a couch.

Since we only have the one sectional we use upstairs, a "new" one was needed. After the awesomeness that was the Nursing Chair I wanted to do the same thing to a small couch.

At this point I was 33 weeks along in my pregnancy and was worried I wouldn't have the motivation to do it by the time our son arrived. Luckily I had my mom help with the dismantling and as my second project of this sort it went quickly!

I wont bore you with the details of the deconstruction since I followed the same philosophy as last time, here is the before and after shot...

The couch itself was in great condition and only cost me $20 at the thrift store! I reused all of the cord in the old welting and bought new feet for it. I did not get as lucky this time around with the cost of fabric, at about $280, but well worth it. Now we have a beautiful couch to enjoy the fireplace on.

Nursery Wall Art

I am excited to show you a new vinyl project! I bought new blades for my Cricut machine and it came out so beautiful!

We are still in the process of putting our nursery together but I was so excited about this project I had to do it almost immediately after the paint dried.

This piece takes up about a 2 ft by 1.5 ft space on his wall.

The Cricut Craft Room was used quite extensively with this project and integrated 4 different cartridges.
- Straight From the Nest
- Give a Hoot
- Stand and Salute
- Lyrical Letters

I was really excited to notice that the Craft Room is out of it's "newbie" stage and has all its quirks worked out. It no longer freezes my lap top! With the changes to the program, it was easy to combine all the images and words together and get all the welding correct. Then when I needed to cut, the program asked me to load the cartridges (one at a time) and it recognized them and took note! So neat! I thought I would need to change them out during the cutting stage but was pleasantly surprised!

Halloween Decorations

Now that it is Halloween I have to share our decorations with you!

We are back in cow country so finding straw bails was quite easy, which makes for an awesome place to use Daddy's corn stocks.

Last year I made head stones out of foam board (the stuff kids use during school projects) and "sponge" painted them with plastic bags and old gray paint. I can not believe they have lasted through southern humidity and now the rain, snow, and wind! Leave a comment bellow if you want to know how exactly I made them.

I decorated the straw bails with marigold plants my mom dug out of their garden. When they were "fresh" they had really nice color and now that they have been out of the ground for a few weeks they look great for the spooky decor.

New Flight Suit Diaper Bag!

Here is my new diaper bag! It is 7"deep and about 16" wide.

On the inside I have one big pocket for a pacifier, bottle loops on each end, a zippered pocket on the inside back, and two small pockets for random stuff below the zippered one.
On the outside I have the two large zippered pockets from the chest of the flight suit and then one large one on the right side for other random things.
On the back, I have another zipper pocket made perfectly for my wallet so it is not lost on the bottom.
This is the left side of the bag with several pockets built in.
- one for my cell phone
- one for change (where it zips)
- and two small ones for pens
The front of the bag lifts up to reveal yet another pocket for a travel changing pad and wipes.

This bag has so many pockets it is crazy! I will post again when I pack it full of all the baby's things!

Second Bras for a Cause!

Sorry this is going to be a short post. I just wanted to share the fun whimsical make over. I posted a project I had done last month for a charity event. Well they wanted one more B1 inspired bra so here it is!

I think I like this one even more than the last! And yes, those are toy B-1s :) I attached them to the bra with metal snaps so they can rotate! I had a ton of fun with this project and even the straps say "remove before flight!"

Hope you like this as much as I do!

In case you missed it here is the previous bra.
